I think that I shall never see, a billboard lovely as a tree. Perhaps, unless the billboards fall, I'll never see a tree at all.

Ogden Nash, "Song of the Open Road"

The Trees of Our Lives

Can you remember the tree you hid behind, swung from, climbed up or picnicked under? Can you imagine a childhood, a life, without them? We can’t either! That’s why we’re planting 10,000 trees (that, and it seems like a great gift to give in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day).

The Buckeye Forest Council, with the support of Rainforest Action Network, is leading the initiative to plant 10,000 trees at worksites on April 17th and 18th.

As you can imagine, acquiring and planting 10,000 trees requires a lot of space, a lot of people-power, and some cold hard cash (actually a check or credit card will work, too). If you have any of these resources, check out the list below to work your contribution into the mix.

  • Register a tree planting worksite: plant one or more trees at your work place, place of worship, favorite park, or anywhere there’s a patch of dirt.
  • Volunteer to help plant trees: we’ve already got over 5,000 trees scheduled to be planted. Sign up to get dirty and get ‘em in the ground.
  • Give a tree: make a donation to have a tree planted in honor or memory of anyone or anything (a great grandma, a great Dane, or that great New Year’s resolution you made!).  $10 buys you a tree. You can plant it. You can have someone else plant it. You can pick from among our worksites for the planting.

    • Step one: make your donation through the Green Fund of the Columbus Foundation  on Facebook. (Other donations can be arranged by contacting erin@greencbus.org)
    • Step two: we’ll receive a confirmation of your donation and follow up with you to discuss the specifics
    • Step three: await that warm fuzzy feeling inside and all the good karma that comes of planting trees (we'll also send you a nice little certificate after Earth Day)
